India's Car Buyers Shift From Petrol Toward Cleaner Fuel Options

Indian car buyers are choosing petrol less often than before.

In August 2026, cleaner options such as CNG, hybrids and electric cars together sold more than petrol cars.

Petrol accounted for 41% of sales, while CNG reached 25%.

Electric-car sales also grew quickly to 30,700 vehicles.

Electric cars made up 7.7% of all passenger-vehicle sales.

Overall car sales grew 16% compared with the same month a year earlier.

Lower GST rates made vehicles more affordable.

The report said some buyers may have hesitated about the E20 petrol transition, encouraging them to consider other fuels.

Delhi had the highest electric-car share, although taxi-fleet registrations raised its reported figure.
