Dulhasti-II Hydel Project Approved in Jammu and Kashmir
The Indian government has approved a new hydroelectric power project called Dulhasti Stage-II on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir.
This project will be built by NHPC Limited and will cost about Rs 3,277.45 crore.
It will use the existing dam and reservoir from an older project called Dulhasti-I and will draw water from the Chenab River.
The government is pushing for more hydroelectric projects in the Indus basin after the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan was suspended.
The project will need to follow certain conditions, like protecting the river and its wildlife.
The project is expected to generate 260 MW of power and will require 60.3 hectares of land, including some private land from two villages in Kishtwar district.
The Union Environment Ministry’s EAC approved the 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II hydel project on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir.
The project will be developed by NHPC Limited at an estimated cost of Rs 3,277.45 crore.
Dulhasti-II will utilize the existing dam, reservoir, and power intake of the Dulhasti-I project and draw water from the Chenab River.
The project's parameters are planned in accordance with the Indus Water Treaty, which is currently suspended.
The clearance is subject to conditions, including the development of a river conservation strategy to mitigate the impacts of hydrological alterations.
