AFSPA Extended in Northeast for Six Months
The government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA, in parts of Northeast India for six months, starting October 1.
This law gives special powers to the armed forces in specific areas.
The areas affected are Manipur (except 13 police stations), Nagaland (9 districts), and Arunachal Pradesh (Tirap, Changlang, Longding, and 3 police stations in Namsai).
The extension is to maintain law and order due to ongoing security concerns, including recent arrests and seizures of arms.
AFSPA extended for six months in parts of Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The extension is effective from October 1.
AFSPA grants armed forces special powers in disturbed areas.
In Manipur, AFSPA is excluded from 13 police station areas.
The decision was made due to the need to maintain law and order.
