Mamdani's Growing Influence Could Complicate Both Parties' Midterm Plans
Zohran Mamdani is the mayor of New York City.
He supported three candidates in Democratic primary elections, and all three won.
This has made people wonder whether he can influence elections beyond New York.
His supporters say his focus on everyday costs could help Democrats connect with voters.
Republicans say his politics show that Democrats are moving too far left.
President Donald Trump, however, has praised Mamdani.
Mamdani also made remarks about the October 7 attack and the war in Gaza.
Some Jewish leaders said his remarks did not give enough weight to the suffering caused by the attack, and some Democrats distanced themselves.
His influence could therefore help some Democrats while creating political difficulties for others.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani backed three candidates who won June Democratic congressional primaries, including challenges to two sitting lawmakers.
Progressive supporters say his appeal shows Democrats can mobilize voters with a focus on affordability and challenges to established leadership.
Republicans are invoking Mamdani to argue that Democrats are moving too far left, though Donald Trump has spoken warmly about the mayor.
An AP-NORC poll found 65% of surveyed US adults blamed Trump's policies for high living costs; 17% approved of his cost-of-living handling.
Mamdani's October 7 anniversary statement condemned Hamas's attack and accused Israel of war crimes and genocide, drawing criticism from Jewish leaders and distancing from some Democrats.
