Global Student Housing Models Offer Lessons After Satya Niketan Tragedy
Many students move to Delhi for college but cannot find university hostel rooms.
The University of Delhi has far more students than hostel beds.
This pushes students toward private hostels, paying guest homes and rented rooms.
On September 6, a five-storey PG building in Satya Niketan collapsed and seven people died.
Investigators are looking at possible building changes, water and structural problems.
Other countries have purpose-built student housing, university partnerships and housing support systems.
These systems can provide safer rooms, shared facilities and better management.
However, countries such as the Netherlands still face shortages, showing that supply must keep growing.
India could create stronger rules and help universities work with safe private housing providers.
The September 6 collapse of a five-storey PG building in Satya Niketan killed seven people.
Preliminary investigations examined basement work, water accumulation, structural weakness and unauthorised alterations.
The University of Delhi has more than 250,000 students but only about 9,000 hostel beds.
The United Kingdom, Australia, Germany and Singapore offer different approaches to student housing and university involvement.
India is urged to regulate PGs and hostels through safety standards, inspections, verified listings and long-term planning.
