Fed Officials Caution on Rate Cuts
Neel Kashkari and Anna Paulson, who are important leaders at the Federal Reserve, talked about the U.S. economy and interest rates.
They said the economy is stronger than expected, which makes it tricky to decide when to cut interest rates.
They think inflation is still too high and needs to come down to a target of 2%.
The job market is cooling down a bit, but not too much.
Kashkari and Paulson are worried that if the Fed cuts rates too soon, it might make inflation worse.
They also talked about how important it is for the Fed to make decisions without political pressure.
They want to make sure inflation is under control before the Fed makes big changes to interest rates.
Paulson also mentioned that she is less concerned about inflation than some of her colleagues because she sees evidence that goods price increases last year will reverse this year.
The U.S. economy has been more resilient than expected under higher interest rates, complicating the Federal Reserve's decisions on rate cuts.
Inflation is moving lower but remains above the Fed's 2% target, with the labor market cooling but not showing significant stress.
Kashkari warned against cutting interest rates too aggressively before inflation is clearly on track to return to target.
Paulson suggested that there is no hurry to cut rates again and thinks rates are still high enough to help bring inflation down.
Paulson expects inflation to make meaningful progress declining to the central bank’s 2% goal by year’s end and is comfortable holding interest rates steady at the Fed’s coming meeting.
