Powerful earthquakes hit Indonesia, Colombia as Ring of Fire stirs

The Earth's outer shell is made of giant puzzle pieces called tectonic plates that move very slowly.

Around the Pacific Ocean, these plates push against each other, and when they suddenly slip, the ground shakes in an earthquake.

Under the sea, big earthquakes can push the water into giant waves called tsunamis.

On August 15, 2026, a very strong earthquake struck near Flores, an island in Indonesia.

It caused landslides, damaged homes and schools, and sadly at least 47 people died.

The quake also made small tsunami waves, but officials lifted the warning when the danger passed.

Around the same time, another big earthquake hit Colombia, and in June two earthquakes struck Venezuela.

Many people wonder if the area called the Ring of Fire is 'waking up'.

Scientists say no — the Ring of Fire is a very busy earthquake zone, and these quakes were separate events that happened to occur close in time.

Earthquakes in this region are expected, but being prepared can keep people safer.
