Former Finance Secretary Questions India’s Revised GDP Figures

Former Finance Secretary Questions India’s Revised GDP Figures

GDP is a way to measure how much money and goods a country produces.

India reported that its economy grew by 7.8 percent.

Subhash Garg, a former finance secretary, says the real growth may have been only 2.6 percent.

He also noticed that the reported value of the economy became smaller after the numbers were revised.

Garg says the government has not clearly explained the missing Rs 6 lakh crore or Rs 12 lakh crore.

The government says GDP figures are regularly updated using new products, services and measurement methods.

Garg does not think changing the base year explains the fall in current-price GDP.

He says weaker investment, a falling rupee and high debt could create problems later.

The debate has raised questions about public trust in India’s economic data.
