Rajasthan High Court Warns Illegal Construction Threatens Jaipur’s UNESCO Status

Jaipur’s historic Walled City is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Rajasthan High Court is worried that illegal building and changes to old structures could damage it.

The court said that lost heritage cannot simply be recreated.

Jaipur received UNESCO recognition in 2019 because of its special planning, buildings and culture.

UNESCO had already raised conservation concerns in 2023 and 2025.

The court wants local authorities to find and report unauthorised construction.

Officials must also explain the rules for building heights, zoning and protecting nearby areas.

They must prepare short-term and long-term plans before UNESCO finishes its final report.
