Cauvery Water Dispute Renews Call for Distress-Sharing Compact

Cauvery Water Dispute Renews Call for Distress-Sharing Compact

The Cauvery River supplies water to farms in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Tamil Nadu opened the Mettur Dam later than usual this year.

This gave farmers some needed water for their crops.

The dam usually opens on June 12 and stays open for about 230 days.

Tamil Nadu says poor rain and insufficient water from Karnataka caused the delay.

Rain improved in August, allowing Tamil Nadu to release water for around 45 days.

The Supreme Court set water-sharing rules in 2018.

However, those rules did not explain how to share water when rainfall is unusually low.
