ED probes codeine syrup smuggling, money laundering in UP

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in India is investigating a big illegal operation where codeine-based cough syrup, which is usually sold only with a doctor's prescription, is being smuggled and sold illegally.

The syrup is being trafficked to other countries and states.

The ED has called in family members of some arrested people to ask about their money and properties.

The main person behind this, Shubham Jaiswal, is missing and might be hiding in Dubai.

The ED is also looking at properties linked to other suspects and has found luxury items and documents showing big money transactions.

The case started when a large amount of the syrup was seized in Lucknow in February 2024.

The investigation is ongoing to find out how big this illegal operation is and where all the money from it went.
