India Adds 48,563 MBBS and 29,080 PG Seats in 6 Years
The Indian government has added a lot of new seats for medical students over the past six years.
They added 48,563 seats for MBBS (the first degree for doctors) and 29,080 seats for postgraduate studies.
The biggest increase happened in the year 2025-26.
The government plans to add even more seats in the future.
They are also making sure that the quality of education stays good by following strict rules.
This means more Indian students can study medicine in their own country instead of going abroad.
India added 48,563 MBBS and 29,080 PG medical seats between 2020-21 and 2025-26.
The highest annual increase was 11,119 MBBS seats and 7,619 PG seats in 2025-26.
The government plans to add 10,023 more seats by 2028-29 under centrally sponsored schemes.
The expansion aims to improve the doctor-population ratio and reduce dependence on foreign medical education.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) ensures quality through regulatory frameworks like MSR, GMER 2023, MSMER 2023, and CBME Curriculum Guidelines 2024.
