Jefferies Asia ex-Japan portfolio hit by India exposure
Jefferies, a financial company, has a special investment group that focuses on stocks from countries in Asia, except Japan.
Last year, this group didn't do as well as expected.
The main reason is that it had a lot of money invested in Indian stocks, which didn't do very well.
Meanwhile, the Chinese stocks in the group did much better.
Even though the group had some ups and downs, it has grown a lot since it started many years ago.
Jefferies said that the group's poor performance last year was because it didn't have enough investments in Korea, which did well.
Overall, the group has done really well over the long term, growing over 4,000% since it began.
Jefferies' Asia ex-Japan long-only portfolio declined 3.7% last quarter, underperforming the benchmark.
The portfolio's poor performance was due to high exposure to Indian stocks, which fell 2.4% in 2024.
Chinese stocks in the portfolio rose 23% in 2024, but this wasn't enough to offset India's losses.
The portfolio has grown 4,198% since inception in 2002, outperforming the MSCI AC Asia ex-Japan Index and S&P500.
Minimal exposure to Korea, which performed well, also contributed to the portfolio's underperformance.
