US Iran Confrontation Escalates as Sanctions and Hormuz Dispute

The United States and Iran are arguing more intensely after talks failed.

President Donald Trump announced very strong new economic punishments against Iran.

Iran rejected the campaign and said it would not force Tehran to surrender.

The main disagreement also involves the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for ships.

The United States says the waterway is operating, while Iran says it will not fully reopen yet.

Fewer ships have been confirmed crossing the strait, and one vessel was damaged near Oman.

Oman is trying to help the two sides manage shipping.

Other attacks and reports of missile launches have increased tensions around the region.

Trump has said talks with Iran could still resume, while Egypt said an Oman-Iran arrangement might help create that opportunity.
