Supreme Court Urges Delhi Police to Create Fear of Law

The Supreme Court told Delhi Police to do more to prevent rape and other sexual crimes.

It said plans are not enough and police must take practical steps before crimes happen.

The court said people who might commit these crimes should understand that they will face serious consequences.

It asked police about a gang-rape case at a park in south Delhi.

The park was described as about two kilometres from a girls’ college, and the court said people had reportedly warned police about the accused.

The court also suggested better monitoring, more effective use of an offenders database, and a possible special control room.

It called for better lighting in public places and enough trained police officers.

The court said women should feel safe in public, and that the authorities should work to prevent similar incidents over the coming four weeks.
