Brussels Seeks Stronger EU Border Controls After Ceuta Crisis

Brussels Seeks Stronger EU Border Controls After Ceuta Crisis

The European Union wants to make its outside borders harder to cross illegally.

Commissioner Magnus Brunner announced a new plan after a large group of migrants entered Ceuta in July.

More than 72,000 people crossed into the Spanish enclave during the crisis.

Some people drowned or were crushed, and many later returned.

The plan would give Frontex a bigger job in protecting borders.

Frontex would also have a team ready to move quickly when needed.

The proposal includes warning systems and efforts to stop people smugglers.

It also calls for more help for countries where migrants come from.

EU member states must approve the plan before it can take effect.
