NBFCs Poised to Outpace Banks in Lending Growth
Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) in India are expected to grow much faster than banks in the next few years.
Reports from JM Financial and Nomura say NBFCs will grow their loans by 15-17% each year from 2025 to 2028, which is faster than the 13-15% growth expected for all loans in the country.
NBFCs are doing well because they are quick at giving loans, especially in areas like gold loans, business loans, and loans for small businesses.
They also serve rural and semi-urban areas better than banks.
While there are some small problems, like higher costs in some loan types, the overall growth story for NBFCs is strong.
Banks are losing some ground because they are slower and stricter in giving loans, especially for smaller amounts.
This means NBFCs are becoming more important in India's lending system.
NBFCs are projected to grow credit by 15-17% annually from FY25 to FY28, outpacing overall systemic credit growth of 13-15%.
NBFCs have advantages in retail credit, gold loans, and MSME lending due to faster execution and better service in semi-urban and rural markets.
Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, and Shriram Finance are expected to see significant growth, with an estimated upside of 16-18%.
Gold loans and MSME lending are key growth areas for NBFCs, with gold loans expected to grow by 18-20% and MSME lending by 16-18%.
Some stress pockets exist, such as higher credit costs in certain loan segments, but overall demand in core retail segments remains strong.
