MP Waikar Calls for Orphan Column in 2027 Census
A politician wants to count how many orphans there are in India, because there are a lot of them, and they might not be getting the help they need.
He wants to add a special question to the next big head count, called the Census, to find out exactly how many orphaned children there are.
The Supreme Court also wants these children to get help.
Counting them would help the government give them education and other benefits.
MP Ravindra Waikar wants a special census column for orphaned children.
Waikar made the demand in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377.
UNICEF data indicates India has about 2.5 crore orphaned children.
The Supreme Court previously expressed concern about orphaned children.
A special census column could help provide orphaned children access to education and welfare.
