Courts Reject Plea To Drop FEO Tag
Mehul Choksi is a diamond businessman who is in trouble for not paying back money he borrowed from the Punjab National Bank.
The Indian government has declared him a Fugitive Economic Offender (FEO) and is trying to bring him back to India.
Choksi has been trying to stop the proceedings against him, but the court has rejected his plea.
The court said that the investigation by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) does not stop the Enforcement Directorate (ED) from proceeding with the FEO case.
Choksi is currently in Belgium, and India is trying to bring him back.
His nephew, Nirav Modi, is already in jail in London for the same case.
Court rejects Mehul Choksi's plea to quash FEO proceedings.
Choksi argued that the ED cannot proceed with the FEO case as the SFIO is investigating the same allegations.
The ED argued that the Companies Act does not bar proceedings under other Acts.
The court agreed with the ED and rejected Choksi's plea.
Choksi and Nirav Modi are accused of siphoning off over Rs 13,000 crore from PNB.
