Modi Vows Developed India by 2047 in Independence Day Speech

On India's 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a big speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

He said thank you to Mahatma Gandhi, who is lovingly called Bapu, and to all the brave freedom fighters.

He said that for the first time, the national song 'Vande Mataram' was sung from the Red Fort ramparts.

He told everyone that India used to be counted among the 'Fragile Five' economies, but within just 12 years it has become the world's fastest-growing major economy.

He promised that by 2047, when India completes 100 years of independence, it will be a fully developed nation.

He said that 140 crore (1.4 billion) Indians are working together and that no force can stop their resolve.

He also spoke kind words to families who were affected by floods and landslides.

He asked everyone to dream big, because small dreams are no longer enough for India.

A 21-gun salute marked the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Red Fort.
