Maharashtra Police Use AI to Predict Crime and Aid Governance
Imagine the police have a smart assistant called MARVEL that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This assistant is like a super-detective that can look at tons of information, like pictures from cameras or sound recordings from forests, much faster than a person can.
MARVEL helps police guess where and when bad things might happen, or even find problems like kids not getting enough food or animals getting too close to people.
It doesn't do the police's job for them, but gives them clues so they can make better decisions and keep everyone safe.
They are also building special AI centers to make this smart system even better.
MARVEL, an AI initiative, aims to augment rather than replace human policing in Maharashtra.
The system analyzes data from sources like CCTV footage and bioacoustics to aid crime prediction and prevention.
Launched in March 2024, MARVEL has been implemented in 16 state departments and made Sindhudurg India's first AI district.
MARVEL develops customizable AI tools for specific departmental needs, such as missing persons cases or malnutrition identification.
Maharashtra is partnering with Microsoft to establish AI centers to further enhance governance through technology.
