Andhra Pradesh Agrees to Joint Survey on Polavaram Backwater Impact
Imagine a big dam called Polavaram that holds back a lot of water.
Sometimes, the water held back by a dam can spread further upstream, like a lake getting bigger.
This extra water might affect nearby areas, even in another state.
Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana are two states that share a river.
AP is building the Polavaram dam.
Some people think the water held by the dam might go into streams in Telangana.
So, AP and Telangana officials met.
AP said they are okay with doing a special survey, like a team checking the area, to see if the dam's backwaters are causing any problems in Telangana.
This survey would be supervised by a central authority.
AP also mentioned that the real impact of backwaters might not be seen until the dam is fully finished, which is in the last phase of construction.
They also said they are ready to sign an agreement for the project if the state government agrees.
Andhra Pradesh government has no objection to a joint survey on six streams in Telangana to assess Polavaram project backwater impact.
The survey will be conducted by the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) under the supervision of the Central Water Commission (CWC).
A previous joint survey on Kinnerasani and Murredu streams was conducted following a National Green Tribunal direction.
The full impact of backwaters may not be felt until the dam reaches its final height of 45.72 metres in phase 3, as it is currently at 41.15 metres in phase 1.
Andhra Pradesh stated that an MoU for the project can be signed once the state government agrees and also provided details on the current work status.
