Disney invests $1B in OpenAI for Sora content licensing
Disney is giving OpenAI $1 billion to use their famous characters in a special app called Sora.
Sora can make short videos, and now it can use over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.
Before, there were some problems because people could make videos with characters they didn't have permission to use.
This new deal fixes that and lets people make fun videos with these popular characters.
The deal lasts for 3 years, and it's a big step for both Disney and OpenAI.
Disney will also use OpenAI's ChatGPT tools for its employees and in Disney+ products.
Some fan-made videos might even be shown on Disney+.
At the same time, Disney is telling other companies like Google to stop using their characters without permission.
Disney says Google is using their characters to make AI images and videos without paying, which is not fair.
Google says they use public data and have ways to control copyright issues, but Disney is not happy and wants them to stop.
Disney is investing $1 billion in OpenAI as part of a 3-year content licensing agreement, allowing Sora users to generate short videos using over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.
The agreement includes strict guardrails to prevent illegal or harmful generation and to protect performers and creatives, with select Sora-generated fan videos potentially being streamed on Disney+.
Disney will deploy ChatGPT tools across its workforce and integrate OpenAI APIs into future Disney+ products, aiming to enhance user-generated content and internal efficiency.
Disney has sent cease-and-desist letters to Google and other AI companies, accusing them of using Disney's copyrighted content without permission to train their AI models, leading to ongoing discussions and potential legal action.
Hollywood unions have raised concerns about compensation and ethical use, while children's advocates have criticized the potential impact on young audiences.
