RBI Raises Repo Rate to 5.5%, Signals Tightening Stance

India’s central bank raised the rate it uses to guide borrowing costs to 5.5%.

Its policy committee also shifted to a stance called calibrated tightening.

The governor said the next move would be another rate increase or no change, rather than a cut, given current conditions.

The bank said India’s economy is strong and expected to stay resilient.

But uncertainty around the world and supply-chain problems could affect activity at home.

The governor also warned that a weak monsoon and strong El Niño may affect the next Rabi growing season.
