Japanese Copper Smelter to Cut Output, Shrink Capacity
Imagine a big factory in Japan that turns raw copper into something useful.
This factory, JX Advanced Metals, is planning to make less copper because it's not making as much money as before.
This is because it's harder to get the raw copper they need, and other factories in China are making more copper, too.
They will also be making the factory smaller.
The factory is trying to find other ways to make money, like getting materials used in making computer chips.
The company hopes to make a lot more money in the future, but they will need to buy other companies to do it.
JX Advanced Metals will cut copper production by tens of thousands of tons in fiscal 2025.
The company plans to reduce smelting capacity by March.
Shrinking margins are the reason for the cuts.
Roughly half of JX's refined copper is exported, mainly to China.
The company is seeking to invest in upstream projects to secure rare metals.
