Chhetri Urges Tata to Reconsider Jamshedpur FC Shutdown
Sunil Chhetri, a famous Indian football player, asked the Tata Group to stop shutting down Jamshedpur FC’s main team.
The club said it will leave the top league next season but will keep working with young players.
Chhetri said this would hurt many people who play and work for the club.
He also worried that the league would be weaker without Tata’s help.
He hopes the Tata Group will think about how this decision affects all of Indian football.
Former India captain Sunil Chhetri publicly urged Tata Group to reverse its decision to shut down Jamshedpur FC’s first‑team operations, calling the move a "punch to the gut."
Jamshedpur FC announced it will withdraw from the Indian Super League (ISL) from the 2026‑27 season, but will continue grassroots development through its parent JFSPL.
Chhetri warned that the club’s exit would leave players and staff without teams and that the ISL would lose a key institutional supporter, potentially harming Indian football.
The club, founded in 2017, won the 2021‑22 ISL League Shield and reached the 2024‑25 playoffs, and is currently competing in the Durand Cup.
Chhetri appealed to Tata’s decision‑makers to consider the broader impact on Indian football, suggesting the choice may be a poor business decision but necessary for the sport’s survival.
