Iran‑Linked Hackers Target Minnesota Water Systems
A group of hackers, believed to be linked to Iran, attacked about 30 water systems in Minnesota on July 26 and 27, 2024.
The attack stopped the water supply in the town of Braham for about two hours.
U.S. security experts say the attack used techniques that match a known Iranian‑backed group called CyberAv3ngers.
The FBI and other U.S. agencies are looking into the incident but have not officially blamed Iran yet.
The U.S. government had warned that Iran‑aligned groups might target critical infrastructure before the attacks happened.
Around 30 Minnesota water systems were targeted on July 26–27, 2024.
The attack cut water service in Braham for about two hours before it was restored.
Cybersecurity firm Tenable linked the attack methods to the CyberAv3ngers group, which U.S. officials say is backed by Iran.
U.S. agencies, including CISA and the FBI, are investigating but have not formally attributed the attack to Tehran.
The incident follows a CISA advisory warning of Iran‑aligned groups targeting critical infrastructure.
