Vande Mataram Debate Sparks Political Clash
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Congress party had a big argument about the song Vande Mataram.
Modi said that the Congress party, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, shortened the song many years ago because of pressure from the Muslim League.
He said this was unfair and showed that the Congress party was willing to give in to demands that divided the country.
The Congress party said that they shortened the song because of advice from the famous writer Rabindranath Tagore, to make sure it respected the feelings of all religious groups.
Modi also said that the song was very important in the fight for India's independence and that it should be remembered and honored.
The great-grandson of the man who wrote the song, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, said that his family's legacy has been neglected by the Congress party and the Bengal government.
Priyanka Gandhi, a leader of the Congress party, suggested that people listen to her speech instead of arguing about the song.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that Vande Mataram and the book it comes from, Anand Math, were never against Islam and were written to fight against the British and the Nawab of Bengal.
He said the song should be given more respect and that it was unfairly ignored after India became independent.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress party of truncating Vande Mataram under pressure from the Muslim League in 1937.
Congress leaders countered that the decision was made following advice from Rabindranath Tagore for communal harmony.
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's great-grandson Sajal claimed that the Congress party and the Bengal government have neglected his family's legacy.
PM Modi highlighted the song's role in India's freedom struggle and its importance in uniting the country.
Priyanka Gandhi urged members to listen to her speech instead of engaging in the debate over Vande Mataram.
