Maharashtra Charity Commissioner Seeks Tata Trusts’ Reply to Complaints
The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner has asked the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust to answer complaints from two of its trustees by 12 October.
Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh say the trust’s management and its role in Tata Sons need investigation.
Srinivasan also questions some trustee appointments and a decision that would limit his vote on a possible Tata Sons stock-market listing.
SDTT disagrees with the complaints and has asked the trustees to withdraw them.
A separate dispute about the Sir Ratan Tata Trust has kept it from holding meetings while an inquiry continues.
That restriction made it harder for the trusts to appoint a representative for a Tata Sons meeting.
Tata Sons’ annual meeting was adjourned because there were not enough members present.
The regulator’s decisions may affect how the trusts and Tata Sons are governed.
The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner gave the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) until 12 October to respond to complaints by trustees Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh.
The trustees alleged governance failures, improper involvement in Tata Sons’ commercial affairs, and risks to SDTT’s charitable status.
Srinivasan questioned trustee appointments and Noel Tata’s chairmanship, and objected to a resolution restricting his participation in a proposed Tata Sons listing vote.
SDTT disputed the complaints in a 5 October letter and urged Srinivasan and Singh to withdraw them, saying they had also asked the regulator to prevent trust meetings and resolutions.
Separately, a regulator’s restriction on Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) meetings impeded the joint nomination of an authorised representative and contributed to Tata Sons’ 18 August AGM being adjourned for lack of quorum.
