BMC to Distribute Cotton Bags, Phase Out Plastic Use
The government in Bhubaneswar wants to get rid of plastic bags.
They will give out cloth bags to shop owners to replace the plastic ones.
If shop owners are caught using plastic bags, they will be fined.
But instead of just paying the fine, they'll get cloth bags to use instead.
This way, the government hopes to help shops and markets switch to using cloth bags and keep the city clean.
There will also be places to buy cloth bags in the markets.
Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to distribute cotton bags to vendors.
The initiative aims to eliminate polythene bags in markets and shops.
Vendors fined for using single-use plastic will receive cotton bags.
Awareness kiosks for cloth bag sales will be in all markets.
Enforcement will be carried out by sanitary inspectors, ward officers, and SHINE squads.
