EU Considers Splitting Foreign Policy Arm Under French, German Pressure

EU Considers Splitting Foreign Policy Arm Under French, German Pressure

The European Union has an office that helps manage its foreign policy.

This office is called the European External Action Service, or EEAS.

The European Commission is studying what the EEAS does.

Some jobs might be moved into departments that already exist in the Commission.

The review comes amid pressure from France and Germany.

No final decision to split up the EEAS has been reported.

If changes happen, the EEAS could become less independent within the EU.

The change would affect a major institutional reform from the past two decades.
