Tamil Nadu Launches Assured Pension Scheme
The Tamil Nadu government has started a new pension plan called TAPS.
This plan gives government workers and teachers a pension that is half of what they earned in their last job.
The workers pay a small part of this, and the government pays the rest.
If a worker passes away, their family gets 60% of the pension.
The government will spend a lot of money on this plan every year.
Workers who joined earlier and didn't get a pension before this plan will also get some help.
Some workers are happy, but they wish they didn't have to pay a part of it.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS) on January 3, 2026.
The scheme guarantees a pension equal to 50% of the last drawn monthly salary for government employees and teachers.
Employees contribute 10% while the state government bears the remaining cost, with an annual contribution of ₹11,000 crore.
Family members of deceased pensioners will receive 60% of the pension, and a gratuity of up to ₹25 lakh is provided.
Employees who retired without a pension before TAPS will receive a special compassionate pension.

Government
The government believes that introducing a 10% employee contribution is necessary to balance the financial burden and ensure the scheme's sustainability.
Employee Bodies
Employee bodies argue that the 10% contribution is a drawback, as it makes the scheme similar to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) rather than the fully state-funded Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
