Farmers Detail Drought Losses to Central Assessment Team

A team of Central government officials visited villages in Vijayanagara district to learn how too little rain affected farming.

They looked at several crops and spoke with farmers about their expenses and losses.

One farmer said damaged maize may leave him unable to recover the money he spent.

Farmers said the announced crop-loss payment was too small and asked for more compensation.

They also said they had not received payments from crop insurance, even after paying premiums.

The team asked for more information about those claims.

Officials also checked drinking water and a lake desilting worksite.

Workers there said their wages were sometimes delayed.

The officials advised farmers to plan carefully and ask banks about available credit.
