US Senate Approves Bill to Impose 100% Tariffs on India, China
The U.S. Senate passed a new law that could let President Trump put very high taxes on countries that buy a lot of Russian oil and gas, especially India and China.
The law also makes it easier to punish Russian officials, banks, and special ships that help Russia sell oil.
Senators from both parties helped make the bill, and it was named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
The bill was approved by a big majority, but the President still has to decide if he will actually impose the taxes.
The law also keeps the U.S. able to stop money going to Iran’s weapons and energy programs.
U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan bill allowing President Trump to impose up to 100% tariffs on the world’s top five buyers of Russian oil and gas, including India and China.
The bill, named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, expands sanctions on Russian officials, oligarchs, banks, and the shadow fleet of oil tankers.
Senator Richard Blumenthal said the legislation targets China and India as the main culprits for fueling Russia’s war, while stressing allies would not be hit.
The measure passed a cloture vote 86‑12, with nearly all Republicans and a majority of Democrats, and now awaits a final Senate vote and House approval.
If enacted, the tariff provision would require President Trump’s decision to actually impose duties; the bill also extends sanctions authority against Iran’s energy and weapons sectors.
