Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Kolkata Wins Maritime Excellence Award
A very old port in Kolkata, called Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK), recently won a special award for its long history and importance to India's shipping.
Even though it's tricky to get to the sea from this port, it's doing really well.
In the first three months of this year, it handled more cargo than any other major port in India.
This means lots of goods passed through its docks.
The port has been serving the country for 155 years and is an important part of the region's economy and trade.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) won the Maritime Excellence Award in the Heritage Category.
The award was presented during India Maritime Week 2025.
SMPK handled the highest cargo traffic among all 12 Major Ports in India during the first quarter of 2025-26.
The port processed 17.186 million metric tonnes of cargo between April and June 2025, a 21.21% increase from the previous year.
