NGT seeks response on elephant deaths
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is asking for explanations from several authorities after seven elephants were killed by a train in Assam.
The train, called the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, hit a group of elephants on December 20, 2025.
The NGT wants to know more about what happened and how to prevent such incidents in the future.
The Assam government has already started an investigation.
Some people think the train might have been going too fast, which could have made the accident worse.
The NGT will hear more about this on January 28 in Kolkata.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sought responses from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Assam authorities regarding the death of seven elephants hit by a train.
The incident occurred on December 20, 2025, when the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express collided with a herd of elephants near Changjurai village in Assam's Hojai district.
The NGT has impleaded several authorities, including the Assam government and the Assam State Pollution Control Board, as respondents in the case.
The tribunal observed that the incident raises substantial environmental questions and has directed the matter to be listed before its eastern zonal bench in Kolkata on January 28.
The Assam government has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident, with the Forest Department examining the circumstances leading to the collision.
