Telangana Witnesses Nearly 71% Rise in Crimes Against Children Since 2017
In Telangana, a lot more crimes are happening against children now than six years ago.
From 2017 to 2023, crimes increased by almost 71%.
Many of these terrible crimes are about sexual abuse and kidnapping.
In 2023, these types of crimes made up 84% of all crimes against kids.
What's very sad is that almost all of these crimes, 99.8%, were done by people the children knew.
This includes family, friends, or people they met online.
Girls between 12 and 18 years old are the most at risk, with 1,520 cases involving them in 2023.
Experts say we need better ways to protect kids, especially teenagers, and teach them how to stay safe.
They also think we need to stop the bigger problems that lead to children being hurt and exploited.

Addressing the Crisis
CRY (Child Rights and You)
Advocates for urgent interventions including adolescent-focused protection and empowerment programs, especially for girls aged 12-18. Recommends strengthening village and ward child protection committees to identify and address risks from known persons and online platforms. Stresses the need to shift focus from general crime reduction to dismantling specific socio-economic and criminal networks driving child exploitation, particularly in trafficking and child marriage.
Perpetrators and Societal Factors
Crimes are committed by known individuals (family, neighbors, employers, friends, online contacts), exploiting trust and relationships. Socio-economic factors and potentially weak protection networks may facilitate these crimes.
