National Accreditation Council Faces Delays Amidst Dysfunction and Controversy
Imagine schools and colleges in India need a special stamp to show they are good at teaching.
This stamp is given by a group called NAAC.
Right now, NAAC is having problems.
They were supposed to start a new, better way to give these stamps, but they haven't.
The old system had a 'one size fits all' problem, meaning it didn't work well for every type of school, especially those in rural areas.
A special committee worked on a new plan, and it was approved, but nothing is happening to put it in place.
The NAAC website also isn't updated, and people are confused.
On top of that, there have been arguments about NAAC being dishonest and unfairly firing people who helped give out the stamps.
The government and the UGC, which watches over NAAC, need to fix these problems quickly.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is experiencing significant delays in implementing a new accreditation process approved in August 2024.
NAAC is described as dysfunctional, with its Institutional Information for Quality Assessment (IIQA) submission being withdrawn in May 2024, halting accreditation for willing institutions.
The NAAC website is not regularly updated, with the last announcement dating back to February 10, raising concerns about the body's credibility.
An overarching committee led by Dr K Radhakrishnan proposed reforms, including a binary system for accreditation, aimed at addressing the 'one size fits all' flaw in the existing process.
NAAC is reportedly embroiled in controversies, including allegations of dishonesty and the questionable dismissal of assessors without proper procedure.
