Microsoft Pursues 'Superintelligence' After Revising OpenAI Deal
Microsoft is starting a new team to build a very, very smart kind of computer brain called 'superintelligence.'
This is even smarter than what they call 'artificial general intelligence,' or AGI, which is AI that can do things as well as humans.
The leader of this new team, Mustafa Suleyman, wants to make sure this super-smart AI is helpful to people and doesn't cause problems.
He calls this 'Humanist Superintelligence.'
Instead of just trying to make AI as powerful as possible, they want it to help us solve big issues like finding new medicines or creating cleaner energy.
This new plan comes after Microsoft changed its agreement with another AI company, OpenAI.
The old agreement had stopped Microsoft from building its own very advanced AI.
Now, Microsoft can work on its own super-smart AI projects.
Microsoft is establishing a new 'MAI Superintelligence Team' to develop AI systems aiming for capabilities beyond Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
The team, led by CEO Mustafa Suleyman, will focus on 'Humanist Superintelligence,' prioritizing human benefit and safety over pure capability.
This initiative allows Microsoft to pursue advanced AI development after a renegotiated agreement with OpenAI removed prior restrictions.
Potential applications include personal AI companions, breakthroughs in healthcare, clean energy, and materials science.
The pursuit of superintelligence is a growing trend among AI companies like OpenAI and Meta Platforms.
