Centre Files Curative Plea Against SC Ruling on Mining Taxes
The Supreme Court of India made a big decision in July 2024.
They said that states in India can collect taxes on mining rights and minerals.
The court also said that the money companies pay for mining (called royalties) is not the same as taxes.
The central government didn't agree with this decision.
They asked the court to change their mind, but the court said no.
Now, the government has asked the court one more time to reconsider.
This is called a curative petition.
The court might hear this request in January 2026.
The decision affects how much money states can get from mining companies.
The Supreme Court ruled in July 2024 that states can tax mining rights and minerals.
The court said royalties are not taxes and are paid for mining rights, not for public purposes.
The Union government filed a curative petition in October 2024 to challenge this ruling.
The curative petition might be heard in January 2026.
The ruling allows states to recover past dues from mining companies, but not before April 1, 2005.
