Joshua Wong Pleads Guilty in Second Hong Kong Security Case

Joshua Wong is a democracy activist from Hong Kong.

He pleaded guilty to a serious national security charge.

Prosecutors said he and other activists asked foreign governments and groups to put sanctions or blockades on Hong Kong or China.

They said the group used online campaigns and meetings with American politicians.

The alleged activities happened in 2020, including after Hong Kong’s national security law began.

The law allows a punishment as severe as life in prison.

Wong is already in prison for another national security case.

Critics say the cases are meant to silence Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.

Chinese and Hong Kong authorities say the prosecution concerns harmful cooperation with foreign forces, not ordinary free speech.
