Rajasthan Man Declared Juvenile 37 Years After Rape Conviction
Imagine a man was found guilty of a crime a long time ago, when he was older.
Later, it turned out he was actually a kid when the crime happened.
Because of this, the rules are different.
The highest court, the Supreme Court, looked at the evidence, like his birth certificate, and agreed he was a kid back then.
Even though he was already found guilty, they had to change things because of the age rules.
So, they sent the case to a special board that deals with kids, to decide what should happen now.
It’s like a do-over because of his age at the time of the crime.
Supreme Court declared a Rajasthan man a juvenile 37 years after a rape conviction.
The man, now 53, was convicted in 1993 for a 1988 rape of an 11-year-old.
His lawyers argued he was a juvenile at the time of the crime, citing his birthdate.
The Supreme Court confirmed his juvenile status based on his date of birth.
The case has been referred to the Juvenile Justice Board for appropriate orders.
