Massive Eviction in Nagaon's Lutamaari Reserve Forest
A big eviction happened in a forest in Nagaon, Assam.
The government told 1,700 families to leave because they were living on protected land.
The forest officials and police helped with the eviction.
The families were asked to leave three months ago, but some stayed.
The government says the forest is protected and no one should live there.
The families want a new place to live.
The eviction is happening because the government wants to stop fights between people and elephants.
The forest was made protected a long time ago, in 1919.
The government will help the families find new homes.
The eviction will continue until all the houses are gone.
A large-scale eviction drive began in Nagaon’s Lutamaari Reserve Forest, affecting 1,700 families.
The operation was led by the Forest Department with support from over 5,000 police personnel.
Notices were issued three months ago asking settlers to vacate the area, and around 70% of the families left voluntarily.
The eviction aims to comply with Supreme Court and High Court directives and reduce human-elephant conflict in the region.
Around 2,070 kacha houses, 192 pucca houses, 3 mosques, 2 government schools, and 3 Jal Jeevan scheme structures were demolished.
