Scammers Duped Women in Mumbai and Hyderabad
In two separate incidents, scammers tricked women in Mumbai and Hyderabad by pretending to be important officials.
They told the women that someone had done illegal things using their IDs and that they were under arrest.
Scared, the women sent the scammers a lot of money.
Later, the police caught some people who helped the scammers by letting them use their bank accounts.
The scammers used these accounts to take the money and send it to other people in different countries.
A 68-year-old retired woman from Andheri West, Mumbai, was duped of Rs 3.71 crore by scammers impersonating Judge Chandrachud, CBI, and police officials.
An unspecified woman from Hyderabad was extorted of Rs 1.95 crore in a similar 'digital arrest' scam.
The scammers threatened both women with arrest and legal action, coercing them to transfer their savings to various accounts for 'verification'.
The West Cyber police in Mumbai arrested a 46-year-old garment trader from Surat for providing a mule account to receive Rs 1.71 crore of the scammed money.
The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police arrested two men from Gujarat for their roles in the fraud, including managing mule accounts and transferring funds to Dubai-based cyber fraudsters through Hawala networks.
