Ambedkar's 1946 Speech: Trying to Prevent India's Partition
In 1946, as India was getting ready to be independent, leaders were trying to create a new government.
The Cabinet Mission Plan had a plan for provinces, but the Muslim League, a political group, didn't like it and didn't want to participate.
Jawaharlal Nehru made a declaration for an independent India.
A disagreement grew because the Muslim League didn't think their concerns were being addressed.
Dr. Ambedkar supported finding a way to include the Muslim League to prevent the country from being divided.
He thought that leaving out the grouping was not right, this was one of the causes that would later lead to India's partition.
The Cabinet Mission Plan proposed a three-tier structure with 'Groups of Provinces'.
Jawaharlal Nehru introduced the Objectives Resolution for an 'Independent Sovereign Republic'.
The Muslim League boycotted the Constituent Assembly's proceedings in December 1946.
Dr. Jayakar moved to postpone the Objectives Resolution to include the Muslim League.
Dr. Ambedkar supported Jayakar's amendment to ensure Muslim League participation.
