Nalgonda Farmers Shift to Direct Sowing
Farmers in Nalgonda district are changing how they grow paddy.
Instead of planting small paddy nurseries and then moving them to fields, they are now directly sowing the seeds.
This change is happening because the cost of labour has gone up a lot.
Women workers now earn ₹800 a day, and men earn ₹1,100 a day.
The cost of transplanting paddy has increased to over ₹6,000 per acre.
Farmers also have to pay for transporting the workers.
Because of these higher costs, farmers are choosing direct sowing, which is cheaper.
The area where direct sowing is used has increased from 40,000 acres to 1.5 lakh acres.
Farmers say that the prices of fertilisers and pesticides have also gone up, making direct sowing a better option to save money.
Experts say that if done properly, direct sowing can save time and money without affecting the crop yield.
Farmers in Nalgonda district are shifting to direct sowing of paddy seeds due to increased labour wages.
Labour wages have increased by 20 to 30 per cent, with female labourers earning ₹800 per day and male labourers earning ₹1,100 per day.
The cost of transplanting paddy nurseries is over ₹6,000 per acre, including transportation costs for labourers.
The area under direct sowing has increased to 1.5 lakh acres in the current Yasangi season, up from 40,000 acres in the previous kharif season.
Farmers are adopting direct sowing to reduce cultivation costs, as the prices of fertilisers and pesticides have also increased.
