Supreme Court Upholds Bail in Jnaneshwari Express Case
The Supreme Court of India recently made a decision about a case involving the derailment of the Jnaneshwari Express train in 2010.
The train crashed because some people damaged the tracks on purpose.
The Supreme Court was asked to review a decision by a lower court that had granted bail to some of the accused.
The Supreme Court said that while national interest is important, the slow progress of the trial and the time the accused had already spent in jail were reasons not to reverse the bail.
They also gave directions to speed up the trial process.
The incident happened because some Maoist cadres were upset about the presence of security forces in their area and wanted to create fear to pressure the government to withdraw the forces.
The Supreme Court upheld the bail granted to the accused in the 2010 Jnaneshwari Express derailment case.
The Court criticized the Calcutta High Court for granting bail but did not reverse the decision due to the slow trial pace.
The incident involved a conspiracy to damage railway tracks, causing a collision and significant loss of life and property.
The motive behind the crime was the resentment among Maoist cadres due to the deployment of security forces.
The Supreme Court directed the trial court to speed up the trial process and conduct day-to-day hearings.
