UK Police Introduce Magnetic Hijab for Safety
The UK Police is introducing a special hijab called the 'Blue Light Hijab' for their officers who wear hijabs.
This hijab has a unique design with a quick-release system.
If someone pulls the hijab during a confrontation, the lower part can detach easily, which helps prevent strangulation.
The undercap stays in place even if the outer part is removed.
This design was created by Detective Sergeant Yassin Desai from the Leicestershire Police and developed with De Montfort University.
The goal is to make the police force more inclusive and safe for Muslim women officers.
The Leicestershire Police has already started using it, and other police forces are also ordering it.
The UK Police allowed officers to wear hijabs in 2001.
There have been trials with this magnetic hijab in London, but for it to be used nationwide, all 43 police forces need to agree.
This initiative aims to encourage more Muslim women to join the police force and address issues of Islamophobia.
Police Constable Zara Basharat has reported experiencing abuse and racial slurs, including incidents where her hijab was pulled off during pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
