Fewer Americans Giving to Charity in 2025
Fewer Americans are giving to charity in 2025.
The number of donors has been decreasing for a while, and this trend continued with a 3% drop in the first nine months of 2025.
Even rich people are giving less, with only 81% of households worth over $1 million donating in 2024, down from 91% in 2015.
The total amount of money given to charities also increased only slightly in 2024.
People are worried about the cost of living, and many feel they can't afford to donate.
Additionally, fewer people are going to church, and religious giving has dropped to less than a quarter of all donations.
Some very wealthy people are still giving large amounts, but overall, charities are struggling.
The government is also giving less money to help people in need.
All these factors together make it harder for charities to do their work.
The number of donors in America fell by around 3% in the first nine months of 2025 compared to 2024.
The share of households worth more than $1m who gave fell from 91% in 2015 to 81% in 2024.
Total giving in America increased by only 3.3% in real terms in 2024, to just over $590bn.
Economic anxiety and declining religiosity are contributing to the decrease in charitable giving.
Supersize donors (those giving $50,000 or more) made up 0.4% of all donors but contributed over 50% of total donations in 2025.
