India Adopts New Diamond Standards
India has adopted a new standard called IS 19469:2025 to help people tell the difference between real diamonds and those made in labs.
This standard says that the word 'diamond' by itself means a natural diamond.
If a diamond is made in a lab, sellers must clearly say so using the full terms 'laboratory-grown diamond' or 'laboratory-created diamond'.
The new rule also bans confusing or misleading words like 'earth-friendly' or 'cultured' for lab-made diamonds.
This change is supported by the Natural Diamond Council and many jewellery businesses in India.
They say it will help people make better choices and trust the diamonds they buy.
India adopts IS 19469:2025 standard for diamond terminology, based on ISO 18323:2015.
The word 'diamond' alone refers exclusively to natural diamonds; qualifiers like 'natural' or 'real' can be used.
Lab-grown diamonds must be explicitly disclosed using only 'laboratory-grown diamond' or 'laboratory-created diamond'.
Misleading terms like 'earth-friendly' or 'cultured' for lab-grown diamonds are banned.
The new standard is supported by the Natural Diamond Council and major jewellery trade associations in India.
